  • A Brave New World – Production Managing for Dance

Arun has worked extensively in the performing arts for the last 25 years as a freelance lighting designer. He was trained at York University’s Theatre department earning a Specialized Honours B.F.A in Theatre Design & Production. Select dance collaborators have included Robert Desrosiers, Peter Chin, Danny Grossman, COBA, Kaha:wi Dance Theatre, Tiger Princess Dance Projects, The National Ballet School and ProArteDanza. He has been the resident designer for Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre since 2002. Theatre credits include Factory Theatre, The Canadian Stage Co., The Globe Theatre, The World Stage Theatre Festival, Expect Theatre, fu-GEN, Cahoots Theatre Projects, k’Now Theatre & Buddies In Bad Times Theatre.

His career has garnered him seven Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations for Outstanding Lighting Design in both the theatre and dance categories. In the musical theatre world, productions have included Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for Livent Inc. (asst.) and The Lion King for Mirvish Productions (Toronto associate). In addition to live performances, he has worked on galleries at The Royal Ontario Museum and for The Thompson – Landry Gallery. Large scale gala productions and award shows have included The Walk of Fame, Gilda’s Club and Fall Launches for CTV.

Arun enjoys mentoring students and he has had the privilege of teaching lighting design at York University in the Dance and Theatre departments, Ryerson University’s Theatre program, the University of Waterloo and The National Theatre School. Productions have taken him to Ukraine, Malaysia, Singapore, India, China and across North America.

In addition to design work, he often production manages alongside his creative role and in some cases as a stand alone PM. Production management clients include DanceWorks, Fall For Dance North, Princess Production’s dance: made in / fait au canada, The CanAsian International Dance Festival, ProArteDanza and for several of our city’s top dance companies.
